My literary essay

"The Prison" written by Bernard Malamud talks about Tommy Castelli whose life is a "prison to him" until one day a girl showed up to the store in which he workes. In this essay the themes Life as a prison and Hope for a change will be analized.
Life as a prison is one of the themes because Tommy feels his life is a prison because he is married with a woman he does not like and works in a job he did not choose, but he is obliged to. "You could never see the sky outside or the ocean because yo were in a prison, exepted nobody called it a prison, and if you did they didn't know what you were talking about or they said they didn't". He
Can not do what he wanted because he can not escape of the life his father had arranged.
The other theme of this story is Hope For a Change, Tommy wants to make the girl reflect about stealing, that is bad and it can bring you problems, as Tommy. He does not want the girl to suffer all he suffered. "He was pretty sure he could stop her, sometime after, he would explained her why it was good she had stopped". He also wants his own life to change and be better.
The themes Life as a Prison and Hope for a Change makea you thinks abour your life, the food and the bad things. In my opinion it is a good story that mekea you reflect about the way you want tour life to be.
