Focusing on Eddie and Alfieri

Alfieri is present in the play as a narrator yet a chracter too.

As a narrator, Alfieri explains the audience the setting, allowing us to understand how everything worked at that time in The Red Hook and by using the word "you" creates abond between him and the audience while explaining this. He has a panoramic view, which lets him understand every perspective and sympathyse with every cgaracter, including Eddie, that's the reason why he also acts as a mediator. He foreshadows some situation, however he is unableto sto them from happening, as the Greek chorus (who can only comment about what is happening in the play, althought can't participate on it), which gives the audience the feeling of wanting to help him preven the tragedy.

As a character he is secondary. Eddie goes to him for advide since he is a lawyer and also a friend. The fact that he is a lawyer doesn't mean that he will follow the law all the time. He  bealives that "setlle[ing] for half " is the best option since the law must be followed despite the fact that sometimes it isn't fair, however he also bealives in the code of honour the community of the Red Hook follows.

Eddie Carbone is very important, his actitude changes through out the play;

At the beggining he is seen as a strong family-man, kind and with a sense of humour, despite the fact that his relationship with Catherine wasn't one a normal uncle would have with his niece, since they were very intimate and barrier-free, besides of Edie constantly over protectng her.  One of the reasons he acts this way with her is due to his fear of her leaving him, besides of asking her not to wear high heels or stop walkig wavy since he is atrracted to her when she does. The arrival of the inmigrants makes Eddie really jelous due to the fact that Catherine and Rodolpho fell in love with each other, which makes Eddie scared of the idea of Catherine leaving him for another man, creating a hostile atmosphere.

 Eddie´s feelings for Catherine were obvious and everyone noticed them, despite of Eddie denying it. He was desperated to find an excuse to separate Catherine and Rodolpho, that's why when he didnt find it his obsession for her made him betray his family, break his own code of honour and caused him the respect of all the Red Hook community.

  1. Valentina, very good work! The way you displayed the information is attractive and clear. However your personal response to the characters is missing. How do you feel for them? Do you admire, respect them? Or the opposite? Do you feel sorry? Etc.
